Local Spotlight: Hortulus Farms Artisan Handmade Market

This past weekend I had my camera in hand again and had the chance to photograph Hortulus Farm. It was an exciting weekend to be in Newtown…to see this historic 100-acre destination garden center celebrate its official grand reopening to the public. It was truly a sight to behold, with heaps of early spring flowers, aged terra cotta at every turn, priceless vintage furniture, baby ewes running about, and the sun streaming through the glass.

There is no better place I can think of than Bucks County when it comes to community engagement and locals coming together to support small business. Our bucolic haven is filled with the expertise and craftsmanship of so many farmers, creatives, designers, and curators…all of whom deserve a little spotlight for their passions and labor. It was incredibly inspirational to see over 30 of them offering their goods throughout the sun-drenched greenhouses of Hortulus Farm this past weekend. On April 1 and 2, artists and creators all over the area (and beyond) set up shop here at Hortulus, where the nursery and greenhouses were bedecked in all of spring’s splendor for the public. The backdrop of pink English daisies, whimsical topiaries, bistro lights and mossy aged terra cotta added so much romance and springtime anticipation to the morning.

As people poured in, it reminded me that there is a true sense of renewal that spring affords us after a long, grey winter. People came to shop, but also to engage and slough off their winter hides. Vendors were having amazing conversations, sharing their expertise, and reviewing the details of their work which is truly a labor of love for each individual. It’s marvelous to see so many talents housed under one space, which ranged from exquisite handcrafted millinery, fine jewelry, floral blooms, paints and prints, craft lattes, geranium cocktails, and wood-fired pizza. The spirit of spring was in the air and it was contagious.

Hortulus Farm is a destination garden center that will continue to host inspiring and talented artists throughout the month of April. To see their full list of upcoming events, click here.

Hortulus Farm is truly the most beautiful backdrop for all of spring’s bounty. We are lucky to have it here in our backyard, and if it’s not quite in your backyard, it certainly is worth the drive. Time spent here is well spent. The amount of work and vision and love that has been poured into Hortulus this season is evident, and I am so grateful that I have this beautiful place to explore (with a craft latte in hand!)
